ResourceSweetwaterSweetwater is an online musical retailer that has excellent service and delivery. While I would definitely recommend utilizing local brick and mortar stores for purchases of instruments. If online purchase is required I recommend  this resource.

EquipmentTuner

Tuners come in all sorts of configurations. I recommend a clip on tuner by TC Electronics. It has auto shut off and is very reliable. There are others that work just fine as well.

The student must be able to tune their instrument to learn to play and to protect the instrumentas it needs to remain tuned appropriately.

Required
EquipmentStrap

Guitar straps are a highly recommended piece of equipment for the guitarist.

While it is not absolutely necessary day 1 it should be acquired at the earliest possible convenience.

Optional
EquipmentInstrument Case
While this is not a necessity it is highly recommended that the instrument be transported in a case or gig bag of some sort to protect it from damage.
Optional
EquipmentAcoustic Guitar Humidifier
Acoustic guitar humidifiers are a necessary piece of gear for the instrument in the eastern climate. Winter brings reduction in humidity due to heating sources which have a very negative effect on the instruments play-ability and longevity if not properly maintained.
Optional
EquipmentGuitar Picks
Guitar picks are a necessary piece of equipment in almost all cases pending style. If your intending to learn classical guitar then this is not necessary BUT I still recommend learning how to appropriately strum with a pick.
Required
EquipmentCapo
The Capo allows us to change key easily OR make an instrument that is to large for its player more suitable for play. While a capo is not required day 1 it is highly recommended that the student acquire one in the first few months. I personally use Kyser but there all sorts of different type that are just as good.
Required (Optional for first few months of instruction)
EquipmentGuitar Foot Rest
This is a useful piece of equipment to have the guitar in the appropriate playing position. However, this is not a necessary piece of equipment and is entirely optional. 2x4’s of appropriate length nailed together can provide the same thing.
Optional
AppMetronome
A Metronome is a device that teaches the student to play in time. There a many types of metronomes that are FREE on Google Play and can be installed on your phone. I currently use Soundbrenner as defined in the link. However, any of them work relatively good.
Highly recommended not required
AppGuitar Note Trainer
This application runs on your phone and provides helpful games etc to teach the student the notes on the guitar neck. It is very helpful and consistent use it builds guitar neck knowledge which is required to progress. It come in a free version, very limited, and a pay version(inexpensive $2 - $3).
Highly recommended not required
EquipmentGuitar Stand
This is a helpful device that keeps your guitar out of its case and accessible while reasonably safe; not in a chair or on floor. There are any styles etc and they all work relative good. I use hangers and stands.
